The Red Mage is a very useful class. In a party of fighting characters he's the magic, and in a party of mages he's the fight. In mixed parties he supplements everyone.

Pros: Good attack power & defense, able to equip a good amount of stuff.
Cons: Expensive, not the best at anything, learns spells slower than other mages.
In the Japanese version the Red Mage is called "akamajutsushi" , which seems to mean Red Magician. I think Red Mage is close enough. Anywho, the Red Mage seems to be based on a multi-classed character from Dungeons & Dragons. While the name Red Mage is used in the English versions of later games, they're actually Red Wizards.

The Red Wizard is not a great improvement over the Red Mage. He can use a few more spells and equip a few more things, but not the best of either. He still gets by. Unfortunately, he doesn't do well attacking bosses.
Pros: Decent attack & defense, able to equip most stuff.
Cons: No level 8 spells, few level 6 or 7 spells, can't equip the best stuff.
The Red Wizard is called "akamadoushi" in the Japanese version, which pretty much means the same thing. They appear in FF3, FF5 and FF11, and there's an NPC Red Wizard in FF9. FF6's Tina (Terra) and Celes could be considered Red Wizards, as could pretty much everyone in FF7, 8 & 10. The Sage class, a variation on the Red Wizard with weak fighting skill but stronger magic appears in FF3. FF4's Tella and FooSooYaa are also Sages, and there are plenty of Sage NPCs in FF1.
