Light Warriors:
Individually, these aren't really characters. They're classes. Collectively however, they are the Light Warriors, and that makes them characters. The best choices for each class do not include the Masamune and Ribbon, which are clearly the best choices (with the possible exception of the Black Belt/Master) and equippable by every class.

Best HelmetSilver Helmet

The Fighter is an important part of any balanced party. He'll have the most defense thru the entire game, and be your best attacker for most of it. He gains Strength on every level, and Agility on most. He can equip almost every weapon and armor for the first half of the game.

Knight
Best WeaponXcalbur
Best ArmorDragon Armor
Best ShieldAegis Shield
Best HelmetOpal Helmet
Best GauntletProRing

The Knight is an upgraded Fighter. He gains the ability to use low-level white magic, and can now equip damn near everything.

Thief

The Thief is actually kinda crappy. Think of him as an investment. He'll eventually be the cool Ninja. Anyway, his ability is superior running. He'll gain Luck on every level, and Agility on most.

Ninja
Best WeaponKatana
Best ArmorOpal Bracelet
Best ShieldIce/Flame Shield
Best HelmetHeal Helmet
Best GauntletProRing

When the Thief becomes a Ninja he gains the ability to cast low-level black magic, equip even more weapons than the Knight, and most armor.

Black Belt (Monk)

The Black Belt is another investment character. He's pretty crappy in the beginning, but after he gains levels he's more powerful unequipped. He'll become the most powerful fighter at the end of the game. He also gains Vitality at every level so he's guaranteed to have 999 HP before the last level.

Master (Super Monk)
Best WeaponFists

The Master is exactly the same as the Black Belt. Go figure.

Red Mage

Agility10Damage5
Intelligence10Hit%7
Vitality5Evade%58
Luck5Magic Defense20
First WeaponRapierBest ArmorOpal Bracelet
Best WeaponSun SwordBest ShieldProCape

Best GauntletProRing

The Red Mage is probably the best class for the early game. He's a good fighter, and has adequate skill at both kinds of magic.

Red Wizard
Best WeaponSun Sword
Best ArmorOpal Bracelet
Best ShieldProCape
Best HelmetCap
Best GauntletProRing

The Red Mage kinda loses his steam after becoming a Red Wizard. He doesn't gain much from the event, and gets overshadowed by the more specialized classes in the late game.

Agility5Damage2
Intelligence15Hit%5
Vitality10Evade%53
Luck5Magic Defense20
First WeaponIron HammerBest ArmorOpal Bracelet
Best WeaponSilver HammerBest ShieldProCape

The White Mage is very helpful with healing and protection spells. Without her you'll need a LOT more potions. She gains Intelligence at almost every level.

White Wizard
Best WeaponThor Hammer
Best ArmorOpal Bracelet
Best ShieldProCape
Best HelmetCap
Best GauntletProRing

When the White Mage becomes a Wizard she can learn any white spell.

Very physically weak, the Black Mage makes up for it by wielding powerful black magic spells. He gains Intelligence at every level.

Black Wizard
Best WeaponCatClaw
Best ArmorOpal Bracelet
Best ShieldProCape
Best HelmetCap
Best GauntletProRing

When the Black Mage becomes a Wizard he can learn any black spell.
