Light Warriors:
Individually, these aren't really characters. They're classes. Collectively however, they are the Light Warriors, and that makes them characters. The best choices for each class do not include the Masamune and Ribbon, which are clearly the best choices (with the possible exception of the Black Belt/Master) and equippable by every class.

The Fighter is an important part of any balanced party. He'll have the most defense thru the entire game, and be your best attacker for most of it. He gains Strength on every level, and Agility on most. He can equip almost every weapon and armor for the first half of the game.
Knight

Best Weapon | Xcalbur
|
Best Armor | Dragon Armor
|
Best Shield | Aegis Shield

The Knight is an upgraded Fighter. He gains the ability to use low-level white magic, and can now equip damn near everything.

The Thief is actually kinda crappy. Think of him as an investment. He'll eventually be the cool Ninja. Anyway, his ability is superior running. He'll gain Luck on every level, and Agility on most.

The Black Belt is another investment character. He's pretty crappy in the beginning, but after he gains levels he's more powerful unequipped. He'll become the most powerful fighter at the end of the game. He also gains Vitality at every level so he's guaranteed to have 999 HP before the last level.

The Red Mage kinda loses his steam after becoming a Red Wizard. He doesn't gain much from the event, and gets overshadowed by the more specialized classes in the late game.
