The Fighter is pretty much the best class to pick. He's a total badass. You won't go wrong with picking one.
Pros: Massive attack power, best defense, able to equip most stuff.
Cons: Expensive to equip in the beginning, no magic.
Fighter comes from Dungeons & Dragons. It's the basic warrior class, good for killing stuff. In AD&D their strength allows them to do stuff like bend bars and such, but that hasn't carried over. In the Japanese version the Fighter is called "senshi" , which translates to "warrior" or "soldier". I debated about what the proper translation should be, until I played the Japanese version of AD&D Pool of Radiance where the Fighter class is indeed "senshi". He's called Warrior in FF Origins and Dawn of Souls. Fighters also appear in FF3 and FF10-2. FF7's Cloud, FF8's Squall & Seifer, and FF10's Tidus could be considered Fighters, and although the characters in FF2 don't really have classes, Frioniel looks almost exactly like one.

Just like the Fighter, the Knight is a total badass. What's more, he has the added bonus of casting low-level white magic spells. The Knight is the appropriate class to not give a Ribbon to (there are only 3), because he can make up for it with the Aegis Shield and Dragon Armor.
Knights gain 1 MP for levels 1-3 on every odd level starting with 15. The MP caps at 4 per level. This means you have to get the class change before level 43 if you want the maximum MP.
Pros: Massive attack power, best defense, able to equip just about everything.
Cons: Only level 1-3 spells.
The Knight is the same in the Japanese version: . Of course the name Knight is slightly misleading, as his low-level white magic ability is more appropriate to a Paladin. Knights also appear in FF3, FF5 and Tactics, and starting with 3, several different kinds of Knights appear. FF4's Cecil & Kain are kinds of Knights, as are FF6's Cayenne (Cyan), FF9's Steiner, and FF10's Auron. You may also consider FF7's Cloud, FF8's Squall & Seifer, and FF10's Tidus to be Knights.
